Artist Renée Théobald was born in Paris and, at the age of 20, enrolled as a student at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Despite marrying in 1947 and raising five children, Théobald became a noted artist who exhibited regularly in Paris beginning in 1951 and world-wide during her lifetime. She received numerous awards, and her work are in private and public collections, including the Museums of San Francisco. She is noted for her impressionistic landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes that are thickly painted using a palette knife. She also pursued the artistic theme of orchestras and musicians in paintings such as The Saxophonist, probably done in the late ‘50s or early 1960s. Théobald’s signature includes only her surname, which she said was an attempt to fight against mid-20th century prejudice directed at female painters.
