Often depicted in art, the Christian story of the adulterous woman is found in the Gospel of John (7:53–8:11). In it, the woman is brought for judgment before Jesus, who decrees that one who is free from sin may cast the first stone. The crowd disperses, leaving him alone with the woman whom he does not condemn. La femme adultère is a theme that remained popular into modern art. For example, it is also the title of a 1957 short story by French philosopher and writer Albert Camus.
