While this painting is not by Rococo painter Jean-Antoine Watteau, but rather a follower or perhaps an assistant, it does follow the format of a new type of picture that was introduced by Watteau. Called la fete galante by the French Academy in 1717, these paintings were kinds of allegories of courtship located in parkland settings.
