Oil on canvas Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Euchlin D. Reeves Collection in memory of Mrs. Chester Green Reeves and Miss Lizzie H. Dyer, UR1967.1.21
Since childhood, artist Louise Herreshoff Eaton of Providence, Rhode Island, summered with her maternal aunts in the country, sometimes in New Hampshire, sometimes New Jersey. In the 1920s, she travelled to Cape Ann in Massachusetts, at times with her Aunt Lizzie, to paint among other artists in Gloucester and Rockport. This painting may have been created on Cape Ann, based on the vibrant and expressive colors found here and in her other work of that period. The sitter is unidentified.
