The original of this work was discovered in Pompeii in 1830 in the ruins of a 2nd century BCE residence that came to be known as the House of the Faun because of the bronze statuette that was located on the lip of its impluvium, a basin for catching rainwater. That original statue is now located in the Naples National Archeological Museum. It became a favorite subject for reproduction during the 19th century.
