Rabbits are associated with longevity and the moon in Chinese tradition. The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (zhōngqiū jié 中秋节) features a rabbit who lives on the moon with the goddess Chang’eand mixes the elixir of life.
The moon represents feminine energy (yīn 阴)that balances the masculine (yáng 阳). Thus, rabbits were traditionally associated with women and fertility and would decorate Chinese women’s clothing and jewelry worn during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls in September or October each year according to the lunar calendar.
