Title
Pugs
Label
Pugs 巴哥犬(bā gē quǎn)
Made in Jingdezhen, China, 1750-1770
Made of hard-paste porcelain
On loan from Felicia Warburg Rogan
Sitting at attention for their owner, these pugs embody the loyalty and friendliness associated with dogs in Chinese culture. According to ancient Chinese legend, dogs were created before all other animals, which explains why one of the symbols for dog (quǎn犬) is a component of so many Chinese words.
Pugs came to Europe from China in the 16thcentury and were an instant hit with wealthy aristocrats. Ceramic figures of pugs were not far behind, and European factories began making examples in the 1740s. This particular pair copies models sent to China from the Meissen factory in Germany.
