Description
Cow 牛(niú)
Made in Jingdezhen, China, 1750-1770
Made of hard-paste porcelain
On loan from Felicia Warburg Rogan
Oxen in China represent the farming peasant class and often symbolize hard work and prosperity. But when creating this cow on the left, Chinese potters copied figures of cows made in the Dutch city of Delft, such as those on the right, which referenced a distinctly Dutch tradition.
