Look closely at a portrait and you may find telling details hidden within its composition that reveal or document insightful information about the sitter, as well as the artist and the era. Two iconic portraits of George Washington and Robert E. Lee in the collection of the Museums at W&L contain interesting stories. Their display history requires some detective work, too.
