This little jug carries a powerful message about the destruction of families by slavery.
On one side is a scene of a slave auction, where a family is being divided and sold separately. On the other is one of the most dramatic moments from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” with Eliza carrying her son Harry over the ice-covered Ohio River while being pursued by a slave catcher as she escapes to freedom. The handle is molded with the torso of a praying man, possibly Tom.
