Modern Art Goes Pop! originally took place November 7 - December 9, 2016 in W&L's Staniar Gallery. It showcased two distinct artistic styles that emerged after WWII in Europe and the United States: Hard-edge Abstraction and Pop Art, and featured artists including Frank Stella, Gene Davis, Robert Indiana, and Andy Warhol. Also included were examples of other contemporary artistic movements: Minimalism and Post-Painterly Abstraction, the latter illustrated by work of the Washington Color School with which Hard-edge Abstraction artists like Davis were also associated. The exhibition, drawn from the University’s Collection of Art and History (now the Museums at W&L), explored the points at which these major twentieth-century art movements intersected and diverged, as well as their continuing legacies.

Extended labels were written by students in ARTH 364: Art of the Sixties under the supervision of Elliott King, associate professor of art history. They have been edited for exhibition by Clover Archer, Staniar Gallery director, and Patricia Hobbs, senior curator of art for the Museums at W&L.
