The two swans swimming across the surface of this stand give the service from which it comes its name: the Swan Service. Made for Heinrich von Brühlof Saxony, it contained more than 2,200 pieces and was the largest service ever made at Meissen.
Founded in 1710, Meissen was the first European factory to make true porcelain. The discovery was one of the great scientific breakthroughs of the time, and it was made by Johann Friedrich Böttger, an alchemist working for Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland.
This is one of the finest pieces of European porcelain collected by Louise and Euchlin Reeves. Louise is thought to have bought this piece while in Europe studying painting at the turn of the 20th century.
This piece is on display in the Reeves Atrium.
