Made shortly after his death in 1799, this jug shows George Washington being borne up into heaven and elevated to god-like status.
Americans showed their reverence for Washington by commissioning paintings, prints and objects decorated with his image, especially after his death in 1799. According to Paul Svinin, a Russian diplomat, “Every American considers it his sacred duty to have a likeness of Washington in his home, just as we have images of God’s saints.”
This piece is on display in the European Ceramics Gallery.
