Vase
Made by the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company, Worcester, England, 1872
Made of Soft-Paste Porcelain
Gift of Betsy Ruehl 2017.10.1
English fascination with both Chinese porcelain and Japanese design is reflected in the vase, which is part of a set showing some of the different stages of porcelain production in Jingdezhen, China. This vase shows porcelain pieces being glazed.
The vase was designed by James Hadley, who used as inspiration illustrations from the first book in Europe devoted to Chinese porcelain, “Histoire et Fabrication de la Porcelaine Chinoise” (“History of the Manufacture of Chinese Porcelain”), published in France in 1856. It in turn was a loose translation ofthe “Jingdezhen taolu” (Records of Jingdezhen Ceramics) published in Chinain 1815.
Though the image is Chinese, the colors used were inspired by Japanese mixed-metal vases that were all the rage in Europe in the 1870s.
This piece is on display in the European Ceramics Gallery
