Few objects better exemplify the patriotism and self-confidence of the United States in the decades after the Civil War than this vase. The vase was a souvenir for the American Centennial, a world’s fair that was held in Philadelphia in 1876 and celebrated the 100th anniversary of American independence.
The vase positively drips with patriotic emblems: American eagles, American flags and shields inscribed “1776 Declaration of Independence,” “1876 Centennial Memorial” and “Washington Father of Our Country.” It was made specifically for the New York ceramic importer and decorator J.M. Shaw & Company.
This piece is on display in the European Ceramics Gallery.
