The conjoined letters “VOC” on this dish are one of the earliest globally recognized corporate logos. It is the monogram of the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, better known in English as the Dutch East India Company.
Founded in 1602 and granted a monopoly on Dutch trade with Asia, the company helped create the modern global economy and was one of the economic engines that made the Netherlands a global power in the 1600s. Among the many things branded with the VOC’s logo were dishes used at their trading settlements in Japan, Indonesia and other trading centers in Asia, Africa and possibly even in the home offices in the Netherlands.
This object is on display in the Japanese Export Gallery in the Reeves.
