Much of the blue-and-white porcelain made in Japan was heavily influenced by Chinese porcelain made in the first half of the 17th century. This dish is no exception.
Its paneled border and central design are copied from Chinese kraak porcelain made between about 1575 and 1640. Kraak was shipped throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, and it had a tremendous influence on ceramic traditions around the world as potters copied its distinctive design.
This object is on display in the hallway in the Reeves.
