In the mid-1800s, one English visitor to the United States observed with some disgust that “spittoons should replace the eagle as the American national emblem.”
He was noting the ubiquity of chewing tobacco, and the receptacles into which chewers spit the resulting juice. Spittoons could be found in American homes, businesses, taverns, hotels, government buildings, train stations and steamboat saloons.
