This cup is from the earliest armorial coffee service known. It was probably made for Harry Gough (1681-1751) of England, a captain who made his fortune working for the Honourable East India Company, which had a monopoly on British trade with China.
The cup is part of the David Sanctuary Howard Collection of Chinese Armorial Porcelain Coffee Cups, which contains over 600 cups made for English, Scottish, Irish and British North American individuals between 1710 and 1860.
This piece is on display in the Chinese Armorial Gallery in the Reeves.
