Soup Plate with the arms of Lee impaling Astley
Made in Jingdezhen, China, about 1733
Made of Hard-Paste Porcelain
Museum Purchase

This charger was made for Eldred and Isabella Lee of Coton, England, or for one of their sons. Scenes of the two main China Trade ports in the 1700s, London and Guangzhou, known to Europeans as Canton, China, decorate the rim. The view of Guangzhou was probably copied from a Chinese ink painting, and the view of London from a panoramic print brought from England.
The Lees of Virginia shared a common ancestor with Eldred Lee, and they also used this coat of arms. Among these was Robert E. Lee, president of Washington College (later Washington and Lee University). The university’s coat of arms includes elements taken from the Lee arms.
This piece is on display in the Chinese Armorial Gallery in the Reeves.
