James Giles (1759-1823), a lieutenant in the Second Regiment of the New York Artillery during the American Revolution, personalized his coat of arms to show his support of the new nation.
He was so proud of his military service that he personalized his family’s coat of arms with the addition of an American flag, a cannon and the motto “Libertas et patria mea” (“Liberty and my country”).
This piece is on display in the Chinese Armorial Gallery in the Reeves.
