The crest of Benjamin Chew Wilcocks (1776-1845)of Philadelphia, aleading China Trade merchant and American consul, decorates this platter.
Known to the Chinese as “The High Devil” because of his height, Wilcocks was heavily involved in the development of the opium trade, which caused incredible social problems in China and transformed the China Trade, shifting control of the China Trade from the Chinese to Western merchants.
This piece is on display in the Chinese Armorial Gallery in the Reeves.
