Refugee in Rockbridge: Land and Belonging

In 1939, Daura and his family left their residence in Saint Cirq for Virginia, planning to briefly visit Louise's family. However, the unfolding of World War 2 shortly after their departure forced the Dauras to remain in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, which would become their primary residence for the rest of Daura's life. During this time, the now-stateless Daura would find belonging in the landscapes of Rockbridge County and would eventually become a naturalized American citizen.  

Daura's portrayal of the natural scenery of Virginia demonstrates not only a sense of curiosity about his new surroundings, but also a search for a new home in the wake of the loss of his Spanish citizenship. Through his portrayal of these landscapes, Daura expresses a sense of grief, but also demonstrates a process of healing as he became more comfortable in his new home.  

Daura's art helped him to be embraced by the local community, who he in turn also embraced. Daura became an active member of his community, making a conscious effort to not become a stranger to his new neighbors. It was in Virginia that Daura became an educator as well, using his life experiences to teach art at nearby Lynchburg College and Randolph College.  

The story of Pierre Daura's identity is one of loss and rebirth. While political upheaval and fascist persecution stripped him of his national identity, Daura's art served as a vessel for him to become a part of new communities while also familiarizing himself with his new homes. Daura's ability to carry on as a stateless person and find new senses of belonging speaks to the perseverance of refugees in starting anew and recovering from great tragedy.
