Description
The painting commemorates an American victory in the Revolutionary War; by occupying Dorchester Heights, the Colonist's troops threatened Boston Harbor with artillery fire and forced the British Army to evacuate the city. Gilbert Stuart ‘s original 1806 monumental painting was commissioned by Samuel Parkman to hang in Faneuil Hall in Boston. In 1876, the city gave the painting to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
